7 Care Tips for Your Invisalign® Clear Aligners
Your Invisalign® aligners do a lot, from improving your smile to straightening your teeth, so you’ll want to take care of them as well as you take care of your pearly whites! If you don’t take the proper steps to take care of your clear aligners, you could end up with them stained, damaged or lost. Here are seven helpful tips to ensure your clear aligners stay in tip-top shape.
1. Consistently clean your Invisalign® aligners with soap and water
Lightly brush your clear aligners with water and antibacterial soap. Use cool or room temperature water to clean them, as hot water may distort your Invisalign®. Your aligners are not as strong as your teeth so don’t use toothpaste on them or brush too hard. Using powerful toothpaste and aggressively brushing may leave your clear aligners scratched or bent.
2. Don’t Use Mouthwash with Invisalign®
Never soak your aligners in mouthwash, as they will absorb the color of the brand you use. You can, however, leave them in the cleaning solution your dentist provides you for 15 to 20 minutes a few times per week to ensure they are fresh and clean on every surface.
3. Remove your clear aligners before eating or drinking
You can remove your Invisalign® clear aligners for two hours a day, including when you’re eating and drinking. Drinking items that include colorings like sodas and other sweet drinks can stain your clear aligners. Eating with them in also poses the same risk and may cause damage to your aligners. Don’t forget to brush your teeth after you eat as you don’t want stray food to be covered by your aligners when you put them back in.
4. When you’re not wearing your Invisalign® aligners, keep them in a dry, safe place
When you cannot wear your clear aligners, or take them out for a period of time, make sure you place them in their carrying case to keep them dry and away from potential danger that could create damage. It’s best to always keep your Invisalign® in the same place when you take them out, so you’ll always know where to find your aligners.
5. Remove your Invisalign® before playing sports
Under no circumstances should you wear your clear aligners while playing sports or doing any significant physical activity. If you participate in any activities that could cause your mouth or teeth harm, make sure to wear proper safety gear, including helmets and mouth guards.
6. Schedule regular dentist appointments
Your trained dentist will notice issues you don’t! They can see if you’re not properly taking care of your teeth or recommend new methods to make sure your teeth are as healthy as can be, which in turn, will make your Invisalign® treatment more effective.
7. Maintain great oral health
Invisalign® clear aligners are great for people who want straighter teeth without the hassle and expense of braces. However, if you don’t take care of your oral health, it may be all for nothing. Be diligent in your oral care routine, by flossing every day and brushing twice a day.
